Created to kick off a New Year’s celebration, Freyja was a stunning large-scale sculptural bonfire that combined ritualistic elements with Viking and Yule-tide traditions. The 4.5-meter-tall ship was constructed entirely from recycled timber and fabric, incorporating runes burned into its bow that named every attendee of the event. The design also featured a traditional striped sail and was positioned on a rise, illuminated from below for maximum visual impact. During the evening, a Viking-inspired naming ceremony set the tone, with torches and folk music leading the crowd in a dramatic procession to light the ship from within, marking the start of the night’s festivities.
Gee’s Role in the Project
Gee worked alongside the project designer to bring Freyja to life. She took charge of the build process, ensuring the bonfire was structurally sound, visually striking, and aligned with the sustainable brief. Gee was instrumental in sourcing 100% recycled materials, carefully crafting each detail—from the burned runes to the striped sail. Her expertise ensured the spectacle was both functional and evocative, creating a memorable centerpiece that embodied the event’s Viking-inspired theme.
