Spectra In A Box
Spectra in a Box is an evolution of the original Spectra installation by Limbic Cinema, thoughtfully redesigned for enhanced functionality and portability. This version utilizes rear projection mapping, making it more versatile and suitable for touring. The updated installation featured at Silver Hayes, Glastonbury Festival 2023, offering a striking and immersive visual experience for festival-goers.
Gee’s Role in the Project
Spectra in a Box marked Gee’s first collaboration with Limbic Cinema, where she joined as a Production Assistant and quickly assumed a pivotal role.
For this project, Gee redesigned and fabricated all elements of the installation, which was originally front-projected onto CNC’d MDF. She conducted extensive material research, experimenting with different thicknesses of polycarbonate for the hanging disc, as well as exploring a variety of rear projection films and materials. Gee refined the cutting process for the disc’s intricate design and developed a method to protect its edges, ensuring both durability and visual appeal.
The disc was suspended using blackened tension wire, selected for its discreet yet strong hold, contributing to the installation’s sleek aesthetic. Gee also designed an innovative rigging system that was securely attached to the container’s inner edges, ensuring the disc was perfectly positioned for optimal rear projection throw.
Behind the installation, the speakers, media server, and projector were strategically arranged, with all lights carefully concealed to create the illusion of an empty container. To ensure security, Gee designed a front access system with a padlock and removable wire mesh, safeguarding the high-value tech housed within while maintaining ease of access for setup and teardown.
Her meticulous attention to detail and problem-solving skills elevated the installation, making Spectra in a Box a standout piece in its tourable iteration. If you are interested in booking Spectra for your next event please feel free to reach out.
