Vessels
Vessels is a striking sculpture where science, technology, and culture converge. Inspired by ancient monuments that united civilizations in contemplation and celebration of the sun, this modern reimagining invites audiences to explore the beauty and power of light in a completely unique way.
Limbic Cinema consulted Gee to carefully design and construct these scupltures. Vessels offers a rare opportunity to witness the vivid, three-dimensional forms created by high-powered lasers from an exceptionally close range. A transparent protective encasement allows viewers to stand directly in front of the pyramids, immersing themselves in the shifting shapes as they synchronize with a melodic soundtrack.
The experience alternates between calming, mesmerizing pulsing forms and dynamic, kinetic light beams that dance through the space. The result is a transformative and otherworldly encounter, transporting audiences into a realm where the physicality of light becomes an art form.
Gee’s role in the project
Gee played a pivotal role in the creation of Vessels, leading the project from initial research and development through to the finished installation. Utilizing CAD software, she developed and communicated the designs, collaborating closely with engineers to ensure the structures were certified as 70mph wind-rated, meeting the rigorous standards of Canary Wharf Winter Lights.
She designed the framework to support the reclassification of a Class 4 laser to a Class 1, ensuring the sculpture’s inherent safety and compliance with international standards. Her role involved extensive material research to achieve the required reflective qualities, compiling comprehensive technical documentation to enable the installation’s seamless international tourability.
Gee also developed and implemented an integrated electrical system, incorporating four speakers, a computer, USB-C monitor control, a ducted haze system, and a laser securely mounted at the apex of the structure. Managing project budgets and timelines, she ensured all elements were completed in time for event deadlines.
In addition, Gee oversaw the logistics of transporting the sculpture globally, designing custom transportation covers and sourcing flight cases for all components, optimizing them for efficient loading into a Luton van. Her meticulous approach ensured that Vessels was not only visually striking but also technically and logistically robust for international touring.
